The Regional "Oleoteca"

Machines and production systems related to the olive oil working

The Regional “Oleoteca”- Abruzzo oil art and history Museum, it's a good example of connection between history and present days. In fact it preserves old oil machines and at the same time it gathers all the extra-virgin olive oil products of the region, DOP, organic and mono type.

Displayed in an old mill's rooms and as many decantation oil tanks testify, the exposition has been possible thanks to the machines the historical mill Crosta has given.

In the first room there is a millstone of the early period of 1900, moved by animals and with a mixing up olive pale.

In the second room there is a wood screw press. Fiscoli piles and olive paste were put under that press and with the help of a wood hoist, a lot of oil must came out and from that must it was extracted the good oil.

Modern machines are the hidraulic presses set in the middle of the room and dated back to the middle of 1900. They have been made by “Fonderie Campione” in Pescara with the help of Corradino D'Ascanio, Abruzzo's native, famous for the invention of the “Vespa” moped and of helicopter. Fiscoli piles and olive pasta were placed under these presses, around the central cylinder.

A centrifugal separator, now at the corner of the room, separated oil from the vegetable water.

In the Oleoteca there is even a room in the upper floor used for Panel Test and a conference room dedicated to the extra-virgin olive oil of Abruzzo's divulgation.

During the Oleoteca opening, in 2006, the idea of an oil competition came out, to exploit this natural resource of our region. So in the showcase on the right of the hells, there are the first three graded oils for each of the four classes: extra-virgin olive oil, organic extra-virgin olive oil, DOP (protected origin) extra-virgin olive oil and monotype extra-virgin olive oil.

To conclude the visit we invite you to have a technical taste of the extra-virgin olive oil of Abruzzo.
